The spine

One claim, restated at seven scales: successive technologies for making death cheaper.

Genes die instead of lineages. Synapses die instead of persons. Hypotheses die instead of scientists. Plans die instead of bodies. Simulations die instead of civilizations. At each step the same move is made — a faster, cheaper inner loop is invented that spares the slower, more expensive outer one. Popper stated the ethic of it in one line: let our conjectures die in our stead.

What makes this an arc rather than a list is that the move is not an analogy repeated. It is the same structure instantiated again and again, and the repetition is the argument.

The arc in one sentence

Intelligence is what happens when a system learns to spend cheaper deaths before it has to spend expensive ones.

The first version is biological. A creature can let a prediction fail before the creature fails. The later versions become cultural, scientific, technological, and civilizational. A person can let a plan fail before a body fails. A field can let a hypothesis fail before a generation fails. A civilization can let simulations fail before worlds fail.

That is what dies instead.

The movements

  1. Movement I — The Predicting Thing asks what intelligence is. Intelligence is prediction error minimisation; next-token prediction is a genuine instance of it; and the thing that separates a naked model from a creature is who owns the loss function.
  2. Movement II — The Boundary asks what a self is. Enclosure is statistical rather than spatial; nothing is unhosted; identity is this moment plus the memory layer; death is the thermodynamic irrecoverability of that layer.
  3. Movement III — The Loops asks where the predictor came from and why it goes stale. Evolution writes the training setup; culture distills through bottlenecks; science tries to make error cheap; ossification makes it expensive again.
  4. Movement IV — The Migration asks what survives and where it goes. Uploading is treated conceptually (not as an engineering program): the hardest test case for the framework built so far.
  5. The Subtle Art Of Not Blowing Ourselves Up takes the same pattern to the civilizational scale. If intelligence is the technology for making mistakes survivable, civilization is where the mistakes become largest.
