You cannot not learn. The only question is what you are becoming an expert in.

You cannot not learn.
The sentence sounds like encouragement, but it is not only encouraging. It is a description of a running system. A living boundary is continuously sampled by the world. It is always being shaped by what it attends to, avoids, repeats, fears, enjoys, defends, practises, and survives.
The brain does not enter idle mode. The body does not stop adapting. Attention does not stop training itself. A person who refuses to learn the lesson someone else wants is still learning something: how to refuse, how to defend, how to ignore, how to explain away, how to feel less, how to feel more, how to keep an identity intact.
The only question is what you are becoming an expert in.
A child becomes expert in the language around them. A musician becomes expert in hearing intervals. A parent becomes expert in the tiny changes of a child's face. A security guard becomes expert in threat detection. A neglected person may become expert in reading danger before anyone names it. A bureaucrat may become expert in maintaining their position. A cynic may become expert in deconstructing others’ ideas.
Expertise isn’t inherently a virtue.
It’s the unavoidable result of continuous experience.
There’s a simplistic version of this idea that says everyone learns at the same rate.
That is too blunt.
People do not learn equally fast at every task. Bodies differ. Brains differ. Opportunities differ. Sleep, nutrition, safety, trauma, tools, teaching, culture, illness, and luck all matter. The arc does not need a false equality claim.
The precise version is better:
Identical machinery running continuously on non-identical data.
Human beings share broadly similar learning machinery. We are not identical machines, but we are recognizably the same kind of learner. That machinery runs continuously. It is always receiving some stream of evidence, reward, punishment, repetition, pain, social feedback, and surprise. What differs dramatically is the data.
Your boundary has been where no one else's has been.
That is why expertise is a function of where your boundary has been.
