One of the oldest solutions to social pressure is separation.
If the group gets too large, it splits. If conflict grows too intense, someone leaves. If hunting grounds are crowded, people move. If a village becomes unbearable, a new settlement forms elsewhere.
This is fission.
Fission isn’t failure. It’s one of life’s great pressure-release valves. Cells divide. Colonies bud. Families split households. Religions schism. Companies spin off teams. Political movements fragment. Species radiate into niches.
Exit allows conflict to remain survivable.
But exit works only while there’s somewhere to go.

Interlude: The Tide Pool at Low Tide
When the tide was high, the shoreline was one world.
Tiny fish darted between stones. Crabs wandered through waving weeds. Snails traveled slowly over everything, confident that whatever they were doing was important.
There was room to move.
Then the moon tugged the water away.
The shoreline broke into puddles.
Each tide pool became a small country with stone borders, limited water, limited shade, limited hiding places, and very strong opinions about who had been there first.
A crab that did not like its neighbor could no longer simply wander off into the sea. A fish could not leave the pool unless a gull kindly carried it, which was not the kind of help most fish preferred.
At high tide, the option to exit solved many problems.
At low tide, the option to exit was gone.
The Naturalist sat on a rock and watched two crabs argue with their claws.

Circumscription begins when boundaries close.
The boundary may be ecological: desert, mountain, ocean, winter, low tide, carrying capacity.
It may be political: neighboring groups, defended territory, borders, states.
It may be economic: land ownership, debt, dependency, supply chains.
It may be technological: infrastructure that locks people into one system.
It may be planetary: there’s no second Earth ready to absorb our failure.
When fission stops working, internal pressure can only be solved through internal coordination.
