Interlude: The Deer in the Endless Meadow
In spring, the meadow looked infinite.
It was not infinite, of course. Meadows almost never are. But from the height of a deer’s nose, with grass in every direction and flowers nodding in the wind, it might as well have been.
The deer ate. The deer grew strong. The fawns survived. The herd grew.
For many seasons, the meadow kept answering yes.
More grass? Yes.
More deer? Yes.
More fawns? Yes.
More paths through the clover? Yes.
The meadow was generous.
But the meadow also had a memory, and winter was one of the ways it remembered.
One year, there were more deer than before. Then more. Then more again.
By autumn, the grass was cropped short. By early winter, the twigs were stripped low from the bushes. By deep winter, the deer walked farther and found less.
The meadow had not lied. It had only answered slowly.
The edge had always been there. The herd had simply needed to grow large enough to hear it.
The Naturalist wrote:
A boundary can be real and still invisible if its echo returns too late.
And then:
The echo from the edge always eventually returns.

A limit can be real without being relevant yet.
That may sound strange, but we live inside it constantly.
The wall across the valley doesn’t constrain you while you’re standing in the meadow. The far shore doesn’t constrain a small boat still near the dock. The edge of the atmosphere doesn’t constrain a cooking fire. The carrying capacity of a landscape doesn’t constrain a small herd while grass is abundant.
A boundary can exist outside the system’s practical horizon.
Then the system grows.
It grows in number, power, reach, speed, appetite, or coordination. It expands through the space that seemed open. It acts for a while as if the world has no edge.
Then, eventually, the signal returns.
The meadow runs short.
The fishery collapses.
The trash washes back.
The climate responds.
The soil thins.
The atmosphere warms.
