Core claim: The Principia Menageria is the story-creature layer of Principia Humanica: a cast of demons, dragons, beetles, house elves, ibexes, amoebas, and other creatures that teach technical ideas by turning them into memorable fables.
The Principia Menageria is the project’s story zoo.
Each creature carries one conceptual load:
The Dragon is the mascot of the whole Principia: the world-sized mystery whose bones are scattered across every science. The other creatures teach more local concepts.
| Creature / story | Primary lesson | Conceptual role |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon Bones | The whole Principia | The Dragon is the master metaphor: one world-sized skeleton, many dig sites, many correct local placards, one hidden articulation. |
| The Ibex and the Impossible Mountain (Story) | IBEX / affordances / gradient navigation | The ibex teaches inside, boundary, environment, exterior; body-relative terrain; local pathfinding; and later gradient navigation. |
| The Curious Amoeba | Campbellian surfaces / Campbellian field theory | The amoeba teaches enclosed surface-reading: surround a mystery, sense only what the membrane can sense, then reshape the boundary to learn more. |
| Boddy and the House of News | Markov blankets | Boddy teaches boundary-mediated perception/action, compressed “news,” nested blankets, and the anti-homunculus self-model twist. |
| The Beetle and the Tunnel | Active inference | The beetle teaches world models, priors, prediction, surprise, “guess first, then check,” and exploration under uncertainty. |
| ‣ | Determinism / predictability | Laplace’s demon teaches why determinism doesn't imply predictability, and why a perfect model collapses into being the universe. |
| Field Notes from the Great Filter | Civilizational survival | The Naturalist teaches how living systems survive their own success: every success reveals the next constraint, abundance moves the limit inward, the edge comes back, and higher-scale survival depends on coordination, renewal, and agency-preserving integration. |
| The Demon Who Tried to Beat The Odds | Thermodynamics / entropy / measurement cost | Future story creature for entropy, information, measurement, and why knowing has a physical cost. |
