Having something outside you maintain the conditions of your existence is not a defect of uploading. It is the situation of every existing thing, including you, right now.

A standard objection to any migration story is that the uploaded person would depend on something outside them.
A server must keep running. A power grid must keep supplying energy. Technicians, institutions, cooling systems, legal protections, maintenance routines, and physical infrastructure must keep the substrate within survivable limits. Surely, the objection says, that makes the uploaded mind artificial, derivative, or not really its own thing.
The objection sounds strong because it assumes a contrast case. It imagines that biological life is self-contained, while synthetic life would be hosted.
But there is no unhosted case.
You are hosted right now. You are hosted by air pressure, temperature, water, food, microbial ecologies, the biosphere, gravity, sunlight, planetary chemistry, other people, language, medicine, roads, agriculture, and a civilization that keeps dangers away from you before you ever notice them. Your body is capable of maintaining itself, but not from just anywhere. It maintains itself only within a range of tolerable conditions, which are themselves maintained by your environment rather than by you.
A biological substrate is already a host.
What changes across a substrate migration is the provider, not the fact of provision.
Hosting changes provider. It never disappears.
The previous page described a boundary as an interface. Everything the inside learns about the outside crosses the boundary. Everything the outside learns about the inside crosses the boundary too.
That means the coupling is symmetric in one important sense. Your senses are the world's actions on you. Your actions are the world's evidence about you. The boundary is not a one-way window through which a little inner observer looks out. It is a two-way contact surface.
So the line is not merely poetic:
Your actions are the world's sensations, and the world's actions are your sensations.
When you touch a table, the table is also touching you. When you speak, the world receives you as sound, motion, pressure, writing, heat, and consequence. When the world presses on your retina, skin, gut, ear, or vestibular system, you receive the world as signal. The interface belongs to neither side alone. It is where each side becomes available to the other.
That is why an outside caretaker cannot automatically disqualify a self. The outside has always been part of the maintenance story. The question is not whether the outside contributes. It always does. The question is how the contribution is organised, and whether there remains a boundary-maintaining system for whom success or failure matters.
